THE ONLY PERSON WE FOUND HANGING OUT down by the loading dock was Bruno Kincaid. I had no idea what he was, a shifter or something else, but he was essentially our version of Swamp Thing. He didnât hang out with many people at the Cathedral, but he was there when we needed help. That day, we found him sunning himself through an open door on the dock. When we asked him if heâd seen Emma hanging around over the past few days, he acknowledged it but seemed confused.
âShe said she was moving potions for Winter,â Bruno explained. âIt didnât seem odd to me.â
âDid she take them out in a vehicle?â Lincoln asked.
âNo.â Bruno shook his head. âShe had a hand truck and was gone for about thirty minutes. Maybe forty-five, but that would be pushing it. The hand truck was empty when she came back.â
I pursed my lips and cocked my head. âWhich direction?â
âIâm not a hundred percent certain,â Bruno replied ruefully. âI just saw her walk through the door. I donât know where she was going.â
âShe wouldnât have risked going around to the front of the building,â I said. âThat would be the dumbest move she could make. She had to leave that way.â I waved toward a very large Detroit neighborhood. âShe couldâve taken the potions anywhere in there.â
âMaybe Angelina will luck out when it comes to finding a building,â Lincoln suggested.
âPerhaps.â Something was bubbling close to the surface, something I knew I was missing. Then it came to me. âJust because she didnât have a vehicle here doesnât mean she didnât have one pick her up two blocks away.â
Realization registered on Lincolnâs face. âThatâs a very good point. All she wouldâve had to do is walk two blocks, and she wouldâve been home free.â
âExcept this isnât the best neighborhood,â Bruno noted. âWe watch our people, but thereâs no stopping someone from trying to mug her as soon as sheâs beyond the fence.â
âSheâs magical and can protect herself,â I said. âFor all we know, there were two other Gorgons waiting on the other side of the gate. They can glamour themselves and can scare off anybody they want with their snake hair. She wouldâve had an easy exit.â
âAnd youâre blaming yourself for that,â Lincoln surmised. âThatâs not fair. You couldnât have known.â
âIt feels like someone shouldâve known,â I argued.
âMaybe, but thereâs no going back now. We have to move forward. Where is your gut telling you to look?â
Uncomfortable with the question, I replied, âI thought we were waiting for Angelina to show up and save the day.â
âItâs going to take her time to come up with a list. You must have an idea.â
I could only think of one place. âWestwood Park.â
âThe development you went to with Jacob and Angelina the other day,â Lincoln said, considering. âYou saw the symbol there.â
âIt has to mean something.â
âI agree. Thatâs where we should go.â
âIâll go with you,â Bruno offered.
âWe need a fighting team to stay here. Jacob can be part of it.
